Some hints for new (and old) users of the MiniBBS system.
You might want to capture or download this file and keep it close
in case you need some help while using the MiniBBS system.
As soon as you have logged in to the system you will get a list
of unread messages in the conferences you are a member of.
The Command Prompt
""""""""""""""""""
Then the command prompt will appear and the system will wait for
your command. The prompt contains some useful information:
(19:43)(00) Main: _
\ \ \
\ \ Name of the current conference
\ Minutes since login (is updated each minute)
Current local time (is updated each minute)
To enter a command simply press the key for that command.
On MiniBBS you don't have to press (RETURN) after the command.
I'll talk more about some og the most used commands in MiniBBS.
For a full list of the commands type a '?' or 'H' (for Help).
Read Next Message
"""""""""""""""""
The easiest command in MiniBBS is the 'Read next message' command.
Simply pressing (RETURN) on the command prompt will display the
next unread message. If there is no more messages in the current
conference you will get to the next conference with unread messages
ny pressing (RETURN) once more and so on until no unread messages.
Your messages only
""""""""""""""""""
If there is a lot of unread messages you may wish to skip some
messages. If you type 'Y' you will get a question:
(19:44)(01) Main: Read messages to all, (N)o or (Y)es/(Return): _
This a standard MiniBBS "choose-box" (like the ST Alert-box :-)
In this case you can type 'N' to read only messages adressed
to you, or 'Y' to read messages to you and to 'ALL'. The last
option in this kind of question is default if you press (RETURN).
Reply to Message
""""""""""""""""
When you have read a message you might want to write an answer.
If you type 'R' you will see this question on your screen:
(19:45)(02) Main: Reply to message: ____
If you want to reply to the last message you read your can press
(RETURN), else you have to enter the number of the message.
The '_' characters after the question tells you how many characters
you may enter. If you can't see them you should reconfigure your
communication program so that BACKSPACE is send as ONLY BACKSPACE
(non-destructive) and NOT as BACKSPACE SPACE BACKSPACE (destructive)
Enter Message
"""""""""""""
Some commands needs more input (like a name or a filename).
Lets try the (E)nter message command and see what happends:
(19:46)(03) Main: Enter message to: _______________________
In addition to entering messages to all users registered on the
system your are calling you migth enter a message to 'ALL' or a
message to the 'SYSOP' that is running the system.
When you have selected the username you will be prompted for
the subject in the same way (a blank subject will abort).
If you choose a to countinue writing a message you will get
an "alert-box" asking if you want it to be a private message.
Private messages can only be read by you, the one you are writing
to and the SYSOP on the system. NO ONE ELSE CAN READ IT !
When you have made you choice the editor will appear. If you
are using VT52 or VT100 emulation it will behave like a small
text editor and you can use the cursor keys on your keyboard.
When you are finished writing save your message with (CTRL-Z).
You can abort your message (and trash it) with (CTRL-Q)(Y).
Join Conference
"""""""""""""""
At this time might want to become a member of more conferences.
To do this you must use the (J)oin command:
(19:48)(05) Main: Conference to join, (?)=List, (RETURN)=Abort: _
To get a list of conferences type '?'. When you have found a name
type it in and press (RETURN). Lets say you joined the SoftWare
conference. You will get a unread messages overview and...
(19:49)(06) SoftWare: _
... the prompt has changed indicating that all reading and writing
of messages is now in the SoftWare conference.
GoodBye
"""""""
Well, that should help getting you started. You will find the rest
of the commands in the (H)elp menu. If you need more help you can
write a message to the SYSOP. Type 'G' to logout from the system.
